The European Day of Languages is celebrated each year on 26 September. It was established in 2001 at the joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

Through this action, some 700 million citizens across the Council of Europe’s 46 member states are encouraged to discover and learn languages at any age, whether within formal education or alongside it. This reflects the shared conviction of the Council of Europe and the European Commission that linguistic diversity is a powerful means of fostering intercultural understanding and a fundamental component of Europe’s rich cultural heritage.
